High School Abílio Duarte and High School Manuel Lopes (UNESCO Associated Schools)

Place: Praia da Gamboa – 4.05.2013

 

At the 4th May of 2013, the team Sandwatch of the Unesco Associated School  “Abílio Duarte” - ESAD (eleven students selected randomly- Classes J e K of 9º Year and two teachers, Rita de Pina and Denilson Delgado) and  the Unesco Associated School Manuel Lopes-ESML (eleven students of 11ºYear, accompanied by two teachers) went to Praia da Gamboa, at the marginal in the city of Praia, to make a monitoring training.

The teams met at 7h30p.m. in the schools ESAD e ML and followed on foot to Praia da Gamboa.  The activity started about 8h30p.m. and finished at 11H30p.m.

The students and teachers participated with curiosity and participation attitude and rest sensitized to the need of the environment  protection of Praia da Gamboa trough there action based in the scientifcs principles of Sandwatch methods.

They made the observation of the beach, where the shells and snails are increasingly less present, measured it, collected and analyzed the seawater. Finally collect trash and put into the proper location for pickup trucks by the City Council.
This beach was, some years ago, local leatherback turtle.
 

Were monitored the following aspects:

1. Length of the beach -Taking into account the size of the beach of Gamboa, was chosen by the party that will ramp up hotel tropic 341.80 meters in length, with reference to the staircase access to the road.
2. Level beach / wet sand - 48 meters
3. Beach width - 92.10 meters
4. Water temperature - 24 ° C
5. PH - 8 - Good
 

6. Phosphate - 1ppm - Excellent
7.  Salinity - 0 ppt (Good) 8. Turbidity - 40 JTU
9. Nitrato - yellow / no result / absence of nutrients
8. Dissolved oxygen / bod - 4 ppm (Good)
9. Wavelength - 15 cm
10. Current toward Northeast
11.
Coliforms - more than 20 coliform colonies per 1000 ml water.
